Things to Consider When Picking Out a Dog Kennel
Countless owners and trainers consider a dog kennel to be an essential item; and it most certainly is. But, it’s best not to make the investment blindly or hastily. A variety of factors can determine whether or not you and your pet will take to the crate.
Firstly, and perhaps most obviously, consider the size of your animal. He or she should have enough room to turn around completely and get situated comfortably. If you’re purchasing a crate for a puppy that will grow into a larger breed, you can either (a) get a crate that fits your puppy for now and buy another later or (b) get one now that will fit the pooch when it matures and simply partition the pen to make it suitable for its current size.
Secondly, think about where you’re going to use the crate. A plastic dog kennel that is airline-approved may be best if you’re a jet-setter. A stained and finished wooden one might be better if you want it to be a permanent part of your home’s furnishings. If your pooch is particularly destructive or an escape artist; a sturdy metal one is likely to be your best bet.
Finally, as with all dog supplies, think about your pal’s behaviors. Some crates come with a sliding plastic tray that is easily removed for cleaning. These are particularly useful if you have a dog that sheds a lot or leaves a bunch of treat crumbs, requiring frequent cleaning. Ones without such a tray may be more acceptable for more tidy dogs.
Whatever you decide, just remember that it’s critically important to make the dog kennel a happy place; a den if you will. Give your pooch a treat whenever you put him or her in, and provide plenty of opportunities for play and family time.
